The IIDA TX/OK Chapter has embarked on the challenge to petition IIDA National Head Quarters to expand support for TAID and OIDC, the state legislative coalitions. This petition supports an idea whose time has come: dedicate $15 of each annual membership dues towards support for the legislative coalitions.
Why?
1. It would insure minimum funding annually for the coalitions.
2. It would put IIDA in alignment with the standard practices of ASID and, even, AIA.
3. For those whose employers pay for one membership, this rolls what are currently two dues into one making it one easy payment (again, just like ASID and AIA membership dues).
4. Every practicing professional registered interior designer benefits from the efforts of the coalitions, TAID and OIDC. The coalitions fight against infringement on our rights, support legislation that strengthens our laws, pays for our lobbyists at the Capitol and more.
How?
1. Our petition asks for a dues increase of $15 (to be implemented in 2011 if the economy has rebounded).
2. All monies collected from the Texas/Oklahoma Chapter members would be returned in full to our Chapter.
When?
1. Click here to print and sign the letter and send back to the IIDA Texas/Oklahoma Chapter Office
2. We need as many letters as possible prior to our January 4th deadline so that we may bring the letters to the IIDA International Board at the Chapter Leadership Council meeting in Chicago.
Would you please join us in this effort and sign a letter petitioning IIDA National to implement this program?
Thank you for your support!

Thanks to NCIDQ there is now a webpage that will help you explain just what you do to your friends and family. It is a model floor plan that by zooming in and clicking on one of the numbers, will tell you the applicable building codes that an Interior Designer would use in that location of the building. It is a great educational tool for students, the public, our legislators and even our families who do not understand what Interior Designers do! Please take a moment to click here and share it with your friends and family!

TEXAS Legislation Update:
In February this year, over 200 Interior Designers representing the Texas Association for Interior Design (TAID) paid a visit to the capitol in Austin for Interior Design Legislative Days and to promote an Interior Design Practice Act for the State of Texas. With so many designers present, the legislators and the media both took notice. Educating our government officials, friends, peers and family about the Interior Design profession is one conversation at a time and we continue to do that on a daily basis. With the Federal government’s current focus on sustainable buildings, it has brought greater attention to state officials that Interior Designers are a valuable resource in obtaining sustainability goals.
Shortly after legislative days in Austin, the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners filed House Bill 1484 to add the word “Registered” to our current Interior Design Title Act. The intent of this bill is to resolve the lawsuit filed by the Institute of Justice against TBAE claiming freedom of speech on the use of the title Interior Designer. After much consideration, it was determined that the TAID would NOT file an Interior Design Practice Act this legislative session but would instead support HB 1484.
House Bill 1484 was signed into law by Governor Perry on May 12, 2009. The bill changes the current Title Act in Texas to “Registered Interior Designer” rather than “Interior Designer” for those who are registered with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners. TBAE is encouraging all Registered Interior Designers (RID) to use this appellation to distinguish themselves from those who have not earned state registration.
As you can see, TAID is an essential component of being an Interior Design professional. We need TAID to have a voice on legislation that affects our profession and provides the public with assurance that qualified interior designers are designing the buildings they frequent on a daily basis. Kudos to all of you who joined and renewed your TAID memberships this year! We even had a few Oklahoma IIDA members who became TAID members. In addition, every City Center in Texas held an event to raise money for TAID. The Chapter, as a whole, gave over $15,000 to TAID to support the legislative efforts in Texas. We have momentum, please continue to be informed, be involved and have a voice on legislation that affects you and the public you serve.
