Member Spotlight: Danika

For Danika Leeks, involvement in the International Interior Design Association has always centered around one word: Connection.

She first joined IIDA many years ago with a simple goal—to build meaningful relationships with designers and contribute to positive change within the industry. What began as a networking opportunity evolved into leadership, mentorship, and advocacy that has shaped both her career and personal growth.

Opening Doors Through Involvement

Danika’s IIDA journey has touched many facets of the profession. From mentoring and hosting events in her showroom to serving on the Chapter Board as Vice President of EDI, her involvement has consistently created space for dialogue, collaboration, and growth.

During the 2020 pandemic shutdown, she even taught her first yoga class to students remotely—finding ways to foster connection and well-being during a time of uncertainty. Her ability to show up creatively and intentionally reflects the spirit of IIDA: community-driven and forward-thinking.

A Defining Moment in Leadership
One of Danika’s most impactful experiences came while facilitating an EDI lunch discussion. That evening, several students approached her to express gratitude for openly sharing the challenges of being a minority in the design industry.
It was a powerful reminder that authenticity matters. That leadership isn’t just about titles—it’s about vulnerability, representation, and creating safe spaces for others to feel seen and supported.
In that moment, Danika realized she wasn’t alone—and that simply showing up as her authentic self could inspire others to do the same.

Community Across City Centers
Traveling and connecting with multiple City Centers has deepened Danika’s understanding of the diverse needs within our chapter. Community, to her, means showing up for one another and collaborating to create safe spaces where people can thrive—professionally and personally.
Learning the nuances of each City Center has strengthened her ability to connect with clients and peers alike, reinforcing that inclusive leadership begins with listening and understanding.

Growth Through Leadership
Through IIDA, Danika has strengthened her ability to lead teams, set strategic goals, and identify clear steps for growth. Her involvement has expanded her professional network and built confidence in guiding meaningful conversations around equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Favorite Memory
Among her many experiences, one stands out with a smile—modeling years ago for The Lauck Group. It’s a reminder that IIDA also brings moments of joy and unexpected opportunities that stay with you long after the event ends.

Advice for Future Members
Her advice is simple: Just do it. Don’t second guess yourself.
Getting involved may require stepping outside your comfort zone—but that’s where growth happens. Through IIDA, you’ll build relationships, expand your network, and develop leadership skills that extend far beyond the design studio.

IIDA in One Word
When asked to describe IIDA in a single word, Danika’s answer comes easily:
Connection.

Connection to peers.
Connection to opportunity.
Connection to purpose.

That is the IIDA Effect.
